Multiplication & Division of Multi-Digit Numbers
Jeopardy to practice for Mid-Module Assessment
We have officially begun the second unit of our new Math Curriculum! During this unit we will be focusing on using the patterns of the place value chart to multiply and divide multi-digit numbers. To begin, there will be a major focus on the mental strategies of multiplication. We will use the commutative, associative, and distributive properties along with our understanding of the power of 10 when multiplying. Then, we will begin to compare our mental strategies to the area, partial product, and traditional models. As we transition into the area and traditional models we will begin to tackle larger and larger factors. Then, we will apply this to the concepts of decimal multiplication we did in unit 1. After a mid-module assessment of multiplication, the end of the unit is focused on division. Again, the initial focus is on mental strategies. Then, we move to an area model and a traditional model of division. Students will be expected to be fluent in all models both mental and paper-and-pencil. Below you will find a variety of websites that will help practice skills related to this unit. You will also find helpful videos that can help you as would work through homework assignments.

Patterns on the place value chart
We will begin our first unit of math this year with a focus on the place value chart (Common Core Standards 5.NBT.1, 5.NBT.2 and 5.MD.1). This friendly little chart has more to offer than just a basic visual model. The following is a list of resources that I hope will help guide your discoveries within this unit. Links will be divided into three categories: games, "flipped" lessons to review what you've learned in school, and challenges which can be completed for extra effort credit or just extra practice. Be sure to check back often as I will be updating the site as we learn and grow together!
