Better Save Money for Souvenirs!
For a once in a lifetime vacation (and don't forget expensive) such as this one, you'll want to document your trip as much as possible to keep the memory alive long after the fun comes to an end! Your task for this trip (project) will be to learn about and collect as many interesting artifacts as you can while visiting each of the four locations. Then, you'll need to decide how you would like to present your "memories" to the class during our "Travel Day!" Options for presenting include:
1. Vacation-In-A-Box
You will decorate a shoe box (inside and out) with pictures and other "artifacts" from your journey. You will need to be able to explain how each picture and "artifact" were important both to the region/location you visited and to your trip.
2. Picture Slideshow with Commentary (Animoto is one example of a program you could use)
You will work to collect realistic pictures to journal your trip throughout each region. If you know how, you can even "Photoshop" yourself into pictures for a more realistic effect. You will need to caption each picture to explain how the location was important to your trip and how it is important to that region or location.
3. "Home Video" with at least four clips documenting your travels
Using a video camera (phones, iPads, FlipCamera, etc.) and a lot of creativity and imagination you can come up with fun ways to make your locations come to life! You can use "green screen" effects or you can film "on location" using your natural surroundings to create "home movies" documenting your trip. In each "scene" you will need to be sure to capture why each location is important to your trip and is important to the country/location you are visiting.

Next stop, Australia!
As you board the Qantas plane you can feel the butterflies bubble up in your stomach with excitement. But be prepared to wait a while to get to your destination! The average flight from Providence, RI to Sydney, Australia will cost $2,319 and will take about 23 hours and 30 minutes!
I hope you brought a good book with you! Speaking of books, before you arrive in Sydney you need to learn about the regions you'll be visiting so that you can better know what to expect, understand the people and the way that they live, and know what sites you'd like to visit.
To help you accomplish this important task, you have been provided with an excellent travel book, National Geographic Reading Expeditions: World Regions: Oceania and Antarctica Geography and Environments. Begin your preparation by reading pages 8-12 to learn about the land forms, climate, and unique plants and animals you will come in contact with. Don't forget to read the captions too!
Time to check to see if you're really ready! Take this Australia Questionnaire to see if you'll remember enough for your trip!

WOW! You have already seen so many exciting sites and learned so much about a continent that is very different from back home! North Island Adventures
Welcome to Auckland, New Zealand! New Zealand is broken into two islands, the north and the south. Aukland is on the north island. After much travel and excitement you feel quite tired and are being offered a "Day of Rest" by your tour guide for this part of the vacation. The tour guide is a bit bossy and insists upon you becoming an expert on the places you'll be visiting! Your only task during your "rest day" will be to read the information she's put together for you. She plans on asking everyone what they read about before you head off to Whakarewarewa Geyser tomorrow so be sure to take note on the following topics:
- Differences in Climate between North and South Islands
- How the tectonic plates impact New Zealand
- What makes New Zealand's animals so unique
- Sites/Information that interests you on North Island
- Sites/Information that interests you on South Island
All of the above information can be found on pages 22-33 of your National Geographic Reading Expeditions: World Regions: Oceania and Antarctica Geography and Environments.
