Daily Five
During Work on Writing students finished their Three Gorges Dam expository five-paragraph essay! Now, they are completing a free choice research project with topics related to the Rain Forests of South Eastern Asia. Many students learned valuable lessons from their experience writing the Three Gorges Dam essay. Many are keeping better track of their sources so that they can create a works cited for their new assignment. In addition, students are organizing their facts as they note-take instead of having to go back and organize their notes later! We can't wait to see how the students apply what they've learned about informational writing to this independent writing project.
In Read to Someone, students continued to read The Man Who Went to the Far Side of the Moon while practicing root words, analyzing graphic sources, and finding interesting words. We will use this information next week during our first debate!
Science & Social Studies
In Science, students used their knowledge of properties of matter to perform an engineering task. Each partnership or small group took an everyday object and changed one property about it so that the object was used for a different purpose OR made better. Mrs. Hunt's homeroom was able to actually make their designs while Ms. Reynolds' homeroom began designing this week and will make them next week! Some examples included: pencils as hair curlers, coffee filters as water filters, glitter nail polish as pretty glue! Next week, look for pictures from both classes!
